Grandpa and Lucy was written by Edie Weinstein- to help more people particularly youth learn more about dementia. Through this project DCFF members read the Grandpa and Lucy book to children, As part of the Marinette County Dementia Friendly Community Coalition’s (DFCC) mission to create a dementia friendly community that is safe, respectful, and welcoming through awareness, education, and engagement.
Children are given a copy of this book to take home & also share with family! The book’s afterward states “Lots of girls and boys have a family member who has dementia like Lucy’s grandpa. Dementia may cause persons to repeat themselves or act in ways different from before, but there are still many ways for everyone around to connect. Lucy used several ways to connect with her Grandpa by looking at old photographs & listening to classic music. Other great connecting activities include doing puzzles, reading books together or going for walks.
The most important thing while interacting with persons with dementia is to do your best to be kind and keep spending time with them. If persons with dementia say something that is not true, it’s better to change the subject or agree with them than to tell them they are wrong. Above all, enjoy your time with your loved one and keep learning about the world around you.” S/he may not remember the conversation but will remember the way you made him/her feel.
